So FM Talk station KLSX, in Los Angeles, is flipping formats to Top 40 as of Friday at 5PM. Yes, exactly what the world needs more of is Top 40 Radio, which is already highly saturated in the LA market. From a business standpoint it makes a lot of sense, as they don’t have to have big money contracts for hosts and staff. In the end it’ll save a bunch because it’ll likely be programmed much in the same way the JACK format is, all tracked, not live DJ stuff. More Timberlake, less brain activity.
The problem, in my view, is music radio is on a decline. Music radio, once upon a time, was incredible. Radio is where you first heard everyone’s new singles, radio is where you became a fan of different artists. Now, though, in the world of online music, iPods, pirating, etc… Radio is playing catch up in a race they can’t win. People don’t listen to radio to get exposed to new, hip music anymore. They find it on MySpace, they find it in their iPod genius list, etc.
It’s just so weird… I think 5 years down the road the error in the programmer’s ways will be seen. It saddens me to know that my favorite form of entertainment is on the decline. I’ve been listening to the Adam Carolla show since day one in the beginning of 2006. This show got me through so much horrendous traffic and is my daily routine. Adam, Teresa, and Bald Bryan were the perfect radio team for me.
What am I going to do in the morning now? I’m not going to listen to Mark and Brian. They’re horrible.
